Weight gain, hormonal changes or lack of physical activity contribute to the development of cellulite. Fat deposits on the thighs, stomach or arms often give an appearance of orange peel skin. Aesthetic medicine has developed some effective treatments to put an end to cellulite in the long term.
Cellulite & Orange Peel Skin - what are they?
Cellulite is caused by changes in the skin's structure. The different layers of the skin are connected by fibrous septa. They can contract and gradually harden. The fat cells between the layers of the skin are then compressed. This causes an orange peel effect. The surface of the skin is wrinkled and blistered.
Cellulite appears at puberty. At this time it is firm and sensitive, the skin becoming red and granular on the thighs and buttocks. Between the ages of 25 and 50, it becomes soft then flaccid. Subcutaneous balls appear and then become more pronounced, the skin takes on more and more of a padded appearance that is called orange peel.
Women are much more prone to the appearance of cellulite than men. In women, cellulite is mainly found on the buttocks, thighs, arms and abdomen.
Sometimes cellulite develops in men. The arms and stomach are the first areas to be affected by the orange peel effect.
There are several types of cellulite:
Adipose cellulite : When standing or lying down, the skin is smooth. This orange peel effect appears when the skin is pinched
Fibrous cellulite : Standing up, the skin has some irregularities (a padded appearance), lying down the skin maintains a smooth appearance. Palpation is not easy and often painful.
Oedematous cellulite : Irregularities in the skin tissue can be observed when standing and lying down. It is characterized by water retention. Fatty nodules are felt on deep palpation and after palpation white marks appear on the fingers. Muscle tone is reduced.
Cellulite and Ornage Peel Skin: what are the causes?
There are several causes for the formation of cellulite on the body.
The first cause of the appearance of cellulite in women is due to hormonal changes When you use a method of contraception, during pregnancy or during menopause, hormones change significantly. This stimulates water retention and thus causes cellulite to appear on different parts of the body.
Cellulite is also a sign of weight gain. Some lifestyle and dietary changes often lead to significant weight gain. The accumulation of fat in the body contributes to the development of cellulite.
Lack of physical activity also contributes to the non-elimination of fat and thus to the retention of cellulite.
There are now many treatments available in aesthetic medicine to put an end to cellulite and this orange peel effect.
Cellulite & Orange Peel Skin: how can we treat them?
To choose the most effective treatment, it is important to properly diagnose the type of cellulite.
Cellfina® is suitable for fibrous cellulite. This is a technique that acts directly on the cellulite and modifies the underlying structure of the cellulite (the septas). The session is performed under local anesthesia in a sterile medical block.
With regard to fat and aqueous cellulite, there are various techniques that combine various actions together or separately: eliminating the excess fat responsible for cellulite, improving the appearance of the padded skin and carrying out lymphatic drainage.
This is the case with regard to:
- Radio frequency devices such as Venus Legacy® and Thermage®.
- Radio frequency + ultrasound devices such as Exilis Elite™ and Accent Prime®
- Microwaves such as Onda Coolwaves®
Other more unexpected techniques also have an effect on cellulite. This is the case with carboxytherapy for diffuse cellulite or Miltaderm LED energy which, thanks to a specific tone, acts at the heart of the cells (mitochondria).
It should be noted that liposuction has no effect on cellulite.
Furthermore, there are also serums and body creams that act on the orange peel effect but do not reach the deep cellulite.
