Vaginoplasty is an intimate surgical procedure which consists of strengthening the perineum (pelvic floor) muscles to decrease the width of the vaginal opening.
Vaginal looseness is caused when the perineum becomes weakened. This is a muscle that supports the weight of the entire upper body. It plays an important role in feminine sexuality because its ability to contract is what creates sensation during penetration. It also prevents incontinence by controlling when you go to the toilet.
The perineum is particularly stressed in overweight people and pregnant women in the event of vaginal delivery or following a badly closed episiotomy.
For older women, a distended perineum can cause the bladder, uterus and rectum to drop (prolapse). Indeed, after menopause, oestrogen levels are reduced and tissue loses its elasticity, meaning it cannot fulfill its role in supporting organs as well as it could before.
In all these cases, the only solution to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle is to undergo a vaginoplasty.
How vaginal surgery works
The vaginoplasty operation is carried out under general anaesthetic without hospitalisation and lasts around one hour.
It has three distinct aims.
Tightening the perineum muscles
If the anus muscles are weakened, the surgeon will reinforce the pelvic floor tissue between the vagina and the anus to tighten the vaginal opening on a muscular level.
Shrinking the entrance of the vagina
Using vaginal surgery, the surgeon will close up the bottom of the vagina so that its opening is tighter and positioned higher up.
The surgeon will remove fat from the patient and inject it into the walls of the vaginal mucosa to reduce the internal size of the vagina. The fat is living tissue composed of cells that require a regular supply of blood, nutrients and oxygen. Lipofilling restores vitality and sensitivity to the vagina.
Effects of vaginal surgery
The patient can resume their daily activities five days after undergoing vaginoplasty. They should not have sexual intercourse for one month.
Vaginoplasty improves the feeling of sex for the patient and their partner, as it creates a more intimate sensation. It also alleviates incontinence, which can cause a lot of stress.
There will also be a visual improvement because the vulva will have a better shape when the vaginal opening is reduced.
