In cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular procedures for both women and men. Indeed, the nose has an important place in the character traits of your face. Often, too predominant or damaged, the nose can be a source of aesthetic insecurity. It is possible to regain your psychological well-being through rhinoplasty.
The rhinoplasty technique
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery operation consisting of remodeling or rebuilding a nose.
Several reasons can lead patients to resort to this operation such as for aesthetic reasons. Either the shape of your nose does not please you or you have a hooked nose, aquiline, rolled up, flat or snub. But a rhinoplasty can also correct larger aesthetic abnormalities such as an abnormality of congenital origin. In addition, in some cases a rhinoplasty can be performed on a patient who, following an accident or ablation, seeks to rebuild a nose. We will talk more about the restorative rhinoplasty.
Whatever is the reason for doing a rhinoplasty, this is a radical and permanent solution to correct aesthetic abnormalities of the nose and to harmonize facial features.
Nasal reconstruction
The rhinoplasty : how the procedure works
Before the surgery, it is essential to make an appointment with your surgeon for a first consultation. You will have the opportunity to express your aesthetic desires and your surgeon will make an accurate diagnosis of your condition. The surgeon will evaluate all contraindications to ensure that there are all the indications to perform such an operation.
During rhinoplasty, the surgeon will make incisions inside the patient's nose, at the level of each nostril. In some cases, an incision can be made outside the nose, across what we call the columella, so that the surgeon accesses the nasal structure more easily. Once incisions are made, the practitioner can remodel the structure of your nose:
- Reduce a bump
- Reassemble or stretch the tip of the nose
- Refine the tip of the nose
- Decrease the size of a nose, length or width
- Correct a deviated nose
- Improve the appearance of the bridge of the nose
- Total reconstruction of the nose: tissues, mucous membranes, cartilage and bone structure
After a rhinoplasty, the patient should wear a cast or splint to protect their nose. The onset of edema and bruising occurs after the procedure and fades over time. It is possible that the patient has a slight loss of smell and taste. This is due to inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose. Rest assured, this is temporary.
The patient should resume social and professional activities 10 days after rhinoplasty.
Nose surgery: anaesthesia, duration of the procedure and hospitalization
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia. The duration of the intervention is estimated as 1h30 and 3h. One night of hospitalization is necessary so the medical team will be able to make sure of your state of health.
Rhinoplasty: the results
The results obtained after a rhinoplasty appear gradually whereas some of the changes are visible quickly. The disappearance of a hump can be seen after the removal of the splint and we can begin to judge a more convincing result after two to three months. The patient will have to wait between 6 months to a year to get the final result.
Why such a long waiting period? Simply because the skin that covers the bone and cartilaginous structure of the nose must be readjusted to the new shape of the nose. The time the skin takes to retract depends both on the way it heals and its elasticity. The evolution will be faster for thin skin than for thick skin. Age also plays an important role since the younger you are, the more elastic the skin is.
The goal is to obtain a nasal appendage that meets the patient's wishes, to respect the proportions between the different parts of the nose so that it fits naturally on the face.
It should be noted that in case the patient is not satisfied, it is possible to do a retouch after one year.
