Premature baldness is a phenomenon that mainly affects men. Being a source of insecurities, hair loss can have strong psychological impacts on men, especially when it occurs at a young age. When facing hair loss, what should you do? When is it possible to consider a hair transplant to have your luscious full hair back?
What is baldness?
Baldness affects mostly men, but can also affect some women. Very often, the first signs of baldness appear between the ages of 20 and 35. But it can also occur around the age of 40. Regardless of when it occurs, men's hair loss can be a source of mental distress and impact the aesthetic appearance of the entire face.
This very common phenomenon (since it affects about two-thirds of men) is however normal. Also known as androgenic alopecia, baldness is characterized by a reduction in the number of hair. The hair becomes progressively thinner and finer. And after a while, the hair stops growing.
Baldness is irreversible whereas hair loss can be temporary. To determine the nature of your hair loss, it is necessary to consult a health care professional.
Causes of an early stage of baldness
Several causes can lead to hair loss in men: stress, hormonal problems, the taking of certain medications, or other deficiencies. Hair loss is then temporary and can occur suddenly. Under these conditions, a consultation with a doctor is essential.
Premature baldness, or androgenic alopecia, can have a genetic background. It is estimated that this form of baldness affects 25% of men between the ages of 25 and 35, and 20% of young people in their twenties. In the older age group, around 50, the rate reaches 50%. However, people who suffer from it are not necessarily totally bald.
What is hair transplantation?
Hair implant grafting consists of taking hair from the area at the back of your head (the crown) and to re-implant it on the front of the head, on the affected areas (generally, the tonsure and the forehead region). The back crown is an area of the head where hair never falls out.
Hair transplants performed today are much more precise and esthetic than before since it's done with micrografts. The result is then very natural and permanent.
Is hair transplant a good solution for early baldness?
Hair implant grafting is the ideal solution to treat early baldness. It allows patients to regain full hair from the very first session.
What are the different hair transplants?
Several techniques exist to perform hair transplants, depending on the patient's hair type.
The FUE technique is indicated for straight, wavy, or slightly curly hair. It allows removing hair follicles in the crown thanks to a micro punch. This technique allows the removal of more follicles than with any other method. On the other hand, it is not possible to implant more than 2,000 hairs per session.
The so-called FUT technique is particularly suitable for frizzy hair. It is also known as the strip technique. It consists of taking a strip of scalp between 1 and 2 cm wide and 20 cm long from the back of the scalp (mid-occipital area) in order to extract the hair. The strip is then cut into small follicular units of 2 to 4 hairs which are re-implanted on the bald areas. The scars on the back of the head are invisible, hidden by the hair.
Are the results permanent?
The results of a hair transplant are visible as early as 6 months, although hair starts to grow back around the third month. The results are permanent after one year. No scars are visible, even on very short hair.
