Baldness is a phenomenon that mainly affects men, but can also be seen in some women. In general, baldness appears between the ages of 20 and 35 but can also begin much later around the age of 40. In any case, baldness can be a cause of psychological discomfort for both men and women.
Baldness: what is it?
Hair has a life cycle. The hair cycle has three different phases:
- The anagen phase: this hair growth phase lasts between 2 and 5 years
- The catagen phase: this is a resting phase, the hair stops growing. This phase lasts about three weeks
- The telogen phase: the hair no longer grows, but it is still attached to the follicle. The old hair then falls out, new follicles appear and the hair cycle starts once again
Baldness, or androgenic alopecia, can be defined as depletion hair loss in a person. Baldness is therefore a progressive loss of hair. It becomes thinner and thinner, eventually turning into downy hair and then it no longer grows back.
Today, baldness affects two thirds of men. Even if this is normal, it can sometimes be embarrassing and change a person’s appearance especially on the face. After the age of 40, most men see their hair fall out. Moreover, the first signs of baldness in humans can be observed on the temples where the hair is receding and then it spreads to the entire head over time.
Unlike hair loss, which is temporary, baldness is an irreversible phenomenon.
What are the causes of baldness?
Baldness has several causes and factors that facilitate its appearance.
Genetic factors
According to researchers, two genes are responsible for hair loss: the X chromosome and chromosome 20. The X chromosome is only transmitted from mother to son. Chromosome 20 is responsible for hair loss after age 45 and can be transmitted from mother to son as well as from father to son.
Hormones
Androgenic alopecia, especially in men, may also be due to a progressive decrease in male hormones. In women, baldness usually appears with the onset of menopause or even after childbirth. In this case, it is primarily due to significant hormonal change.
Other factors
Stress, poor nutrition or even certain medications can aggravate baldness in both men and women.
Baldness: how to overcome it
Baldness can be treated in different ways depending on the extent of your baldness.
When baldness starts, PRP injections to the scalp or Miltahead LED helmet sessions may be recommended. These two treatments help to slow down hair loss, but also to make your hair thicker.
Hair transplants are the best way to overcome baldness once it is visible. This hair surgery technique allows the patient to get a full head of hair in one session. There are different hair transplant techniques such as the FUE transplant or the Artas robot.
