The hair transplant technique
The principle of capillary implants is simple: the hair is removed from an area of constant growth, and re-implanted in an area where hair no longer grows. In this case, the technique consists in removing grafts from an elongated area on the back of the neck. The hair that grows in this area never falls out, even if it is re-implanted.
This technique is known as the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) It is the most common type of hair transplant today because it involves removing hair follicles one by one without leaving a scar on the nape of the neck, and is perfect for small patches of baldness.
Hair transplants using FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) are still very rarely performed but they have two significant advantages:
- They allow a large area to be covered in just one session
- This is the only technique that is suitable for patients with afro-textured hair.
The stages of a hair transplant
Hair is regrown in little groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units. Units of one or two hairs are used to redesign the hairline and give it a very natural look. Units of three or four hairs are implanted towards the middle of the head to give the hair thickness and volume.
The hair transplant is carried out in three stages.
Generally, the surgeon will completely shave the donor area before removing follicular units however, it is possible to carry out a FUE transplant without shaving. In this case, small areas are removed that are covered up by the surrounding hair.
First of all, the practitioner will remove the follicular units with a punch, a very fine tool that preserves the hair bulb on the neck and temples. This leaves small holes less than a millimetre in diameter, which leave scars in the form of small white dots that are practically invisible. Manual extraction retains the stem cells located in the hair bulb. The donor area regenerates and can be used for subsequent sessions.
The second stage of an FUE hair transplant involves preparing the hair grafts. The assistants check the quality of the grafts, which can include one to four hairs. They are then preserved in a storage bath of saline solution.
Finally, there is a hair implantation phase. The surgeon marks the areas to be treated. This drawing serves as a reference throughout the procedure. The hairs are implanted using a needle, which allows a tiny slit to be made in the skin while the graft is inserted at the same time.
All you need to know about the hair transplant procedure: duration, anaesthetic, hospitalisation
Hair transplant operations take quite a long time. Indeed, it involves implanting thousands of follicles on top of your head. According to the patient's needs, one hair implantation session may last between 3 and 5 hours.
The operation is carried out under local anaesthetic and is an outpatient procedure. This means there is no need for the patient to spend the night in hospital.
Before / After: hair transplant results
With nearly 500 to 2000 grafts implanted, the first results are immediately visible with the follicles discreetly emerging from the patient's head. But, like a newly planted lawn, it takes patience to see the results of a hair transplant. Hair will start to grow after four months. The hair growth results will be visible from the sixth month. Finally, the patient will be able to see the final result after one year. The scar on the nape of the neck will be completely invisible from the moment the re-implanted hair reaches 1 to 2 centimetres.

FUE hair transplantation can be combined with PRP Hair injections and LED hair treatment. The techniques improve the chances of survival of the hair implanted into the bald patch.
