Some already see them as a new health scourge for Western populations: obesity and overweight are affecting more and more individuals, and at an increasingly younger age, reducing life expectancy. Heart disease or diabetes II related to junk food and sedentary lifestyle are on the rise.
Each one of us is more and more aware of this, with the desire and the will to lose weight quickly.
But getting slim or losing weight always proves difficult, even with sport and a new lifestyle: and not seeing any results is quickly demotivating. If bariatric surgery has long been the only solution to lose weight quickly, aesthetic medicine now makes it possible to tone and sculpt your body with body contouring treatment like Emscuplt!
The causes: what is weight gain?
Weight gain results from the accumulation of lipids in specialized storage cells, the adipocytes. Their number is fixed in adulthood, because they are then unable to multiply or regenerate. Fat excess is possible because their volume can be multiplied by fifty.
How are fat bulges formed?
Weight gain is often summed up as an imbalance between the calories provided by the diet and those that the body needs to spend: the difference is then stored as fat reserves. This is the classic pattern for a person with little exercise and a diet that is too rich.
But it is not the only one.
Because weight gain comes more precisely from a difference between the destruction of lipids (catabolism or lipolysis) and their synthesis (anabolism or lipogenesis). Other factors can therefore explain a fat excess, such as hormonal abnormalities, even with a healthy lifestyle.
This is often observed in physiological conditions (hormones, sexual menopause) or pathological conditions (hypothyroidism).
How to lose fat?
Losing weight involves sustainably supplying fewer calories than you need, with two strategies.
Significant metabolic increase
- Either by increasing the basal metabolism, by increasing muscle mass at rest, for example with EMSculpt, because the muscle consumes energy.
- Or by increasing efforts to burn fat reserves, which often involves intense physical exercise, more than 60 minutes each day.
Drastic decrease in calorie intake
- Either by reducing its caloric intake, especially the artificial rapid sugars in ultra-processed foods (industrial dishes, soft drinks).
- Or by reducing the digestive absorption of calories.
What is the difference between slimming or losing weight?
Slimming is the loss of localized fat deposits, while losing weight is an overall loss of excess fat. In both cases, the silhouette will be slimmer, more slender and more toned.
What is BMI?
The body mass index, known as BMI, is calculated by dividing weight by the height squared.
It measures the amount of fat in your body. Overweight is defined as a BMI between 25 and 30, while obesity is defined as a BMI greater than 30.
What is BFI?
The Body Fat Index or BFI is calculated as the ratio of hip circumference to waist circumference. A doctor may also measure a fold of fat with an adipometer.
A woman with naturally large hips is considered overweight for a BFI of 33-38; for a man, overweight is considered as soon as the BFI is in the 20-25 range.
