Superficial peeling is a form of gentle peeling, where only the first surface layers of the epidermal coating are removed. Superficial peels used in aesthetic medicine aim to remove dead cells, to boost cell renewal and facilitate the natural rejuvenation of the skin.
For this purpose, the superficial peel uses fruit acids to gently cleanse and exfoliate the epidermis. These are painless and without side effects. This superficial peeling homogenizes the skin texture, boosts the complexion, reduces fine lines and gives your face a youthful look.
The principle: mechanism of action of a superficial peel
The purpose of the peel is to eliminate part of the skin so that it can regenerate itself. The superficial peel only eliminates the outermost parts of the epidermis. Since the epidermis is neither innervated nor vascularized, it is painless and without any side effects, such as natural skin peeling.
What is a fruit acid facial peel?
Fruit acids are the active ingredients of choice for a superficial peel. They have a slow, gentle action, so they only act on the upper layers of the skin. From a chemical point of view, they are organic acids carrying an alpha hydroxy-acid AHA radical, hence the abbreviation AHA peel.
From a biological point of view, they are naturally mild acids such as maltic acid from apples, glycolic acid from sugar cane, mandelic acid from almonds...
How do fruit acids work?
The acid radical AHA destroys the weak chemical bond of the corneocytes forming the superficial epithelium (stratum corneum).
These dead keratinocytes separate and are eliminated, without desquamation, because each cell is individually detached.
This micro-abrasion of the stratum corneum removes the superficial lipidic film and any embedded impurities: the skin texture is smoothed, resulting in a more radiant complexion, with skin that is both healthier and more radiant.
As a consequence, the deep epithelial layer (germinative base) accelerates its renewal to restore the lost thickness: the entire epidermis is thus rejuvenated.
Certain AHA acids (ferulic or mandelic) also act on the pigmentation of the skin, interfering with the synthesis of melanin, the pigment of lentigos (brown spots or age spots).
Indications: Who is the fruit acid peel intended for?
It is a gentle peel mostly used for prevention, or as a remedy for light imperfections. It can be done on both men and women, at any age, any season of the year, regardless of your skin phototype (light or dark skin). No social avoidance is necessary: it can even be done between two meetings.
A superficial peel regulates the sebaceous film.
It removes the cutaneous surface film, made up of sebum and impurities, and clears up blackheads or dilated pores. The skin is healthier, less oily and the microbial risk is reduced (prevention of acne).
An AHA peel exfoliates dead cells.
This exfoliation homogenizes the skin texture and removes imperfections. The cross-epidermal distribution of your skin products will be increased, resulting in an optimized effect: no more creams will remain on your skin without penetrating well. Your skin is immediately more beautiful, more sensual and softer.
A peeling with fruit acids boosts the radiance of the skin.
A smooth skin texture reflects light better, resulting in a radiant and luminous complexion.
A gentle peel rejuvenates the face, neck and cleavage.
The rejuvenation of the epidermis gives a more supple, younger, smoother skin.
How the Superficial Facial Peel works
This painless peeling can be performed at any time in our premises of aesthetic medicine in New-York.
Before a fruit acid peeling at the Clinique des Champs-Elysées in New-York
Your facial specialist will most often recommend a home treatment 3 weeks beforehand in order to exfoliate your skin and slow down the activity of the melanocytes. On dark skins, your practitioner may recommend a dark skin peel (Melapeel®).
During a fruit acid peeling session on the face or neck
On a cleansed and oil-free skin, your practitioner will apply the fruit acid solution, using a pad, brush or absorbent cotton. He will choose a liquid or semi-liquid form (gel) according to the area to be treated.
The duration of the session depends on the desired effect: the peeling action is blocked at the end of the session with a pH neutralizer and rinsing. Your New-York peeling specialist will then finish with an emollient treatment. It usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
After a superficial peeling with fruit acids
It is recommended to avoid sun exposure or any source of heat or irritation for a few days. No side effects are seen (redness or scaling).
The results of the fruit acid peel
The complexion is instantly more radiant, brighter, fresher.
Your skin becomes softer, younger and more sensual to the touch.
Your doctor will advise you on the recommended number of sessions for a personalized protocol. You can undergo a fruit acid peel several times a year, as this superficial peel remains a gentle peel, which is never damaging to the skin.
